Many Opportunities for Hearing Help in Florida

Recently, the Florida State Chapter held their November board meeting. A link to the meeting was sent to those in the Florida State Chapter email directory.  I encourage you to watch this very informative meeting. If you did not receive a link to the meeting, contact Debbe Hagner at [email protected]

The Florida State Chapter is well managed. There was a report from Debbe Hagner,  state chapter president, on activities, webinars, hybrid meetings, (combination of in-person and zoom meetings), and full zoom meetings. Debbe is a true advocate of those with hearing loss. She spends hours putting together educational and helpful programs for the membership. She runs the state chapter watching out for all those in need of hearing help.

Tanya Williams, our Vice President, is full energy. Now that we find ourselves getting back to normal, she has begun a Recharge Program. Tanya is taking the time to connect with the various Chapter Leaders throughout Florida. She suggests ideas for programs and lets them know how the state chapter can aid their local chapter. Tanya’s dedication to this program is evident.

Tanya also oversees the Florida State Chapter Website. If you visit the website at www.HOA-fl.org, you will find information about the state and local chapters, hearing news, information about technology, where to get hearing help and links to the Hearing Loss Association of America Website, a bit of something for everyone.

The state chapter is currently planning a large presence and is hosting Hearing Loss Association of America’s National Convention in Tampa from June 23 to June 25, 2022. The convention will be held at the JW Marriott on Water Street in a newly revitalized area of downtown Tampa. Visit the convention’s website and the website of this marvelous hotel for more information. Registration began on Nov. 29. Be sure to sign up for early bird discounts.

There is a need for convention volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Debbe for more information. Volunteers will receive discounts to the meeting.

In addition, there are many opportunities to help the Florida State Chapter. Donations are needed. The current board is searching for a secretary and treasurer. Help is needed with the Website and the newsletter. If your talent lies in this direction, contact Debbe Hagner for more information at [email protected]

I have always been impressed with the quality of offerings of our wonderful Florida State Chapter. This is truly an organization with the goal of helping those with hearing loss to live life to the fullest. If you are not currently a member, I encourage you to become one.

I also encourage you to volunteer your time and talent to help the members of the hearing loss community in Florida.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Linda Bilodeau

I’ve grappled with hearing loss since 1978. Through it all, I’ve faced periods of denial, acceptance, curiosity, trust and hope. But more often than not, I’ve felt annoyed, angry and frightened. I’ve encountered despair, loneliness and envy. I’ve experienced panic attacks. I’ve met understanding people, kind souls who helped me a great deal and others who thought I had nothing short of an invisible plague. As a way of coming to terms with my hearing loss, I’ve decided to put my feelings about my disability down on paper. My hope is to better understand myself and perhaps you’ll find a little something in my meanderings that will help you, too.
